Experience and Expertise¶
The experience and expertise that M5L Consulting brings to every engagement has been forged across some of the world's most demanding infrastructure environments. Below is a selection of the roles and projects that have shaped our thinking.
Cloudflare¶
Engineering Manager → Senior Engineering Manager¶
Michael joined Cloudflare as one of its first 200 employees, growing with the company from its early days through a period of extraordinary scale. As Engineering Manager and later Senior Engineering Manager, he built and led mixed development, network, and operations teams across three offices — London, San Francisco, and Singapore — supporting Cloudflare's 200+ data centres and millions of customer properties.
He founded new teams, developed embedding models using SREs to help developers operationalise their software, and helped shape the incident management and organisational structures that underpinned Cloudflare's global reliability. Following an internal restructure, Michael was promoted to lead the separation of internal teams, enabling greater specialisation and coaching two team leads into their first management roles.
Subspace¶
VP – Global Network Reliability¶
Michael joined Subspace as one of its first 50 employees, taking on the role of VP of Global Network Reliability. Working alongside the CEO and broader C-suite, he led the complete rebuild of the Subspace global network — designing and delivering 130+ global network locations and helping to generate over $100m in customer interest.
He restructured the Global Operations team from a NOC-focused model to a more SRE-driven approach, significantly improving response and resolution times, while hiring globally to build time zone coverage and a more diverse talent pool.
Imperva¶
Senior Director of Engineering¶
Most recently, Michael served as Senior Director of Engineering at Imperva, recruited to refocus and re-energise globally diverse teams spanning SRE, Infrastructure & Network Engineering, and Software Engineering. He led a full modernisation of the network automation platform, drove infrastructure-as-code adoption from 50% to 95%, and rebuilt cross-departmental relationships — all while participating in post-merger integration following Imperva's $3.7bn acquisition by Thales Group.
Across every role, Michael has been recognised for his ability to bring clarity, structure, and momentum to complex technical organisations.
